Why a heat pump might finally make sense in Northern Kentucky

A few years ago we’d have told most homeowners to stay on gas. That math has changed. Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold their efficiency down to ~10°F outside, the federal 25C tax credit offsets a chunk of the project, and electric rates here are flat enough that running cost is genuinely competitive with natural gas.

That said, it’s still not the right answer for every home. A drafty 1920s foursquare with single-pane windows will still be better off with a high-efficiency gas furnace. A well-insulated ranch with an existing ductwork system is a textbook heat-pump candidate.

Dual-fuel configurations

The safest bet for our climate is a dual-fuel setup, a heat pump paired with a gas furnace backup that automatically takes over below a threshold (usually 30–35°F). You get the efficiency of the heat pump for 80% of the heating season and the brute-force heat of gas on the coldest nights.

What the 25C tax credit covers

Through 2032, the 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers a percentage of qualifying heat pump equipment plus installation labor, up to an annual cap set by the IRS. We pick equipment that qualifies and give you the forms your tax preparer needs. We’re not tax advisors, but this is federal law and your CPA will know exactly what to do with it.

Why Reinhart

What sets this heat pump replacement job apart.

  • Honest sizing, heat pumps are especially sensitive to oversizing; we won't put a 4-ton on a 2.5-ton house.

  • Dual-fuel configurations done right: smart thermostat, proper balance point calculation, compressor lockout temp set for our climate.

  • 25C tax credit paperwork handled, we provide everything your tax preparer needs.

  • If a heat pump doesn't pencil out for your house, we'll tell you and quote the gas furnace instead. No forced-sale.

Frequent questions

heat pump replacement, quick answers.

Modern cold-climate heat pumps will, rated to heat down to ~5–10°F with 80%+ of their nameplate capacity. For the 2–3 weeks a year it gets below that, a dual-fuel gas backup handles the edge cases.
Installed, a heat pump usually carries a modest premium over a comparable furnace + AC, and the 25C tax credit offsets part of that. Operating cost is a wash to slightly better than gas, depending on electric and gas rates.
Often yes, if it's under 10 years old and in good shape. We can add a heat pump as the primary and leave the furnace as the backup, the simplest path to the efficiency upgrade.
